Episode #18 "Interview with fellow grappling dad Ben Graf"
Update: 2018-01-10
Description
The boys interview Ben Graf, brand new purple belt and co-owner of Grand Rapids Jiu Jitsu Lab. Ben is a former training partner of Paul's from Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu.
As a fellow grappling dad we discussed the importance of having your children involved in BJJ.
Ben talks us through is own BJJ journey, a term he’s come to hate as it is overused.
Paul tries to get recovery tips from Ben only to find out that he’s a savage and doesn’t bother with that. You know, because real man and all that...
We talk about why we train and what it means to us as well as some small gripes we have.
Are Ben and Kip really talking about golf??
We wax a priori about Jiu Jitsu and lament that the people who would most benefit from it have no desire to train, and the people who like to hurt other people tend to gravitate toward it.
Ben talks about the expectations of climbing in belt rank and how that affects him. People seem to judge you more the darker your belt becomes.
We discussed our plateaus and what they mean to us.
Ben doesn’t seem to get Kip’s humor and Kip tries to explain himself. It’s awkward and hilarious.
We bring up picking the right kind of partners for our particular goals.
We talk about making people tap vs letting submitions go if they don’t want to tap.
Different schools of thought about coaching people when you’re not the coach.
We touch on hygiene just a bit.
